Traditional sarees in India vary in style, colors, design, and type of fabric. It is not just a mere tradition to wear sarees but is an integral part of the culture and outlook of an entire civilization. Wearing a saree can be dated as long back as 230 BCE and since then it has come a long way. Today, there are different styles worn in different states like the saree style of Bengal is different from that of Kerala or Gujarat.
Along with the style, traditional sarees were mostly woven in silk or cotton till the end of 20th century. In the 21st century, cultural roots are being explored through inimitable and classic designs on various fabrics like Crepe, Georgette, and Chiffon to bring out the essence of tradition.
There are several popular types of traditional sarees available in India. Each type of saree has its distinctive design and pattern, type of silk or fabric used; type of printing or stitching, and place of origin like the Jamdani cotton sarees are from West Bengal while the famous Kanjeevaram silk saree belongs to Tamil Nadu.
The essence of traditional sarees also lies in the design printed or hand stitched or hand woven. Designs with elegant borders and decorative heavy palla, the right mix of bold and subtle colors, and intricate intertwining of foliate and floral motifs highlight the cultural norms associated with wearing a saree. Some of the traditional sarees even have their own trademark style like the Benarasi brocade style, the extensive zari threadwork in Jamawars, the Peacock motifs in Kanjeevarams, and the narrative motifs in Baluchari. These trademark styles have defined traditional sarees over time as one of the most classical and elegant wear for women of India.
